History
A symbolic moment of national rebirth
The silver 10 guilder of 1970 is a commemorative coin marking 25 years of the liberation of the Netherlands (1945–1970). Queen Juliana, who had lived through the occupation, gave this design personal meaning. The coin shows her profile beside that of her predecessor Wilhelmina, a symbolic moment of continuity and national rebirth.
With 25 grams of silver at 720‰, this coin holds 18 grams of fine silver. The mintage of around 6 million examples makes it no absolute rarity, but in excellent condition, especially proof-quality versions, it reaches higher numismatic premiums. For Dutch collectors and European coin enthusiasts it remains both an important piece of 20th-century history and a silver holding at once.
Three years later came the second silver tientje: the 10 guilder of 1973, struck for Juliana’s silver jubilee, twenty-five years after her investiture in 1948. The reverse shows the crowned Dutch coat of arms with the year 1973. Size and fineness match the 1970 issue: 25 grams at 720‰, so again 18 grams of fine silver. More than 4.5 million examples were struck of this date. We buy both tientjes on their actual silver content, with the condition of the coin as an additional factor.
