The gold standard from South Africa
The Krugerrand is the world’s best-known gold investment coin. Its name combines Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic, and the rand: named after the gold-rich Witwatersrand region.
On 3 July 1967 the first Krugerrand was struck, with one goal: to make South Africa’s enormous gold reserves accessible to the private investor. The strategy caught on like no other.
The 22-carat gold, alloyed with 8.33% copper, gives the coin its characteristic golden-orange hue and excellent wear resistance, making it ideal to trade physically. The obverse shows the striking portrait of Paul Kruger, the reverse the springbok, South Africa’s national animal.
That is precisely what makes the Krugerrand so simple to value: the value follows the day’s gold price almost entirely. One ounce of pure gold, recognised worldwide and tradable at once.
