Royal Dutch gold
The Gouden Tientje, as the Dutch fondly call the 10 guilder gold coin, is a piece of Dutch history you can hold in your hand. The very first pieces were struck in 1808 under Louis Bonaparte. After 1818 the coin took its definitive form under King William I.
Over the decades the Gouden Tientje bore the portraits of William I, William II, William III and Queen Wilhelmina (in four portrait variants). The rarest piece is the 1892 Gouden Tientje with Wilhelmina’s portrait: only 61 struck.
A historical anecdote: on some years King William III received a portrait that soon earned the popular nickname “King Gorilla”, because of the strong features the engraver gave him.
Production stopped in 1933. Today the current gold price sets the base value, but rare years can be worth considerably more.
