History
Half a millennium of trust
The British Gold Sovereign is the coin that has withstood the test of time like no other. For more than 500 years, from Henry VII in 1489 to King Charles III today, it bears the effigy of the British monarch.
On the reverse: Saint George slaying the dragon, designed in 1817 by the Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci. One of the most iconic coin designs in the world, remaining virtually unchanged. The initials “B.P.” are sometimes visible on the reverse.
The Sovereign circulated throughout the entire British Empire, from London to Melbourne, from Ottawa to Bombay. Each mint had its own identifying mark on the coin, a detail that carries extra value for collectors.
In the United Kingdom the gold Sovereign is exempt from Capital Gains Tax and from VAT as investment gold. In Belgium the VAT exemption applies as well.
