History
South African gold before the Krugerrand
Besides the world-famous Krugerrand, South Africa has a rich tradition of gold coins. The gold 2 Rand was introduced in 1961 at the birth of the Republic. The obverse shows Jan van Riebeeck, founder of the Cape Colony in 1652.
But the history reaches deeper. South Africa was striking gold before the Krugerrand existed:
| Coin | Period | Weight | Fineness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burgerspond | 1874 | ±8 g | 90% |
| Krugerpond | 1892–1900 | 7.988 g | 22 ct |
| Veld Pond | 1902 | ±8 g | ≈99% |
| 2 Rand | 1961–1983 | 7.988 g | 22 ct |
The Veld Pond (1902, only 986 pieces) is of almost pure gold and holds great historical importance. The famous “Single 9” Krugerpond (1899) is one of the most expensive coins in the world. Do you have a rare variant? Then we certainly let the numismatic premium play its part.
