Purity as a trademark
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is one of the most respected investment coins in the world. Its exceptional purity of 99.99% pure gold makes it unique of its kind.
The Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint, partly in response to the international boycotts against the South African Krugerrand. Canada deliberately positioned itself as a reliable alternative with higher purity. In 1982 the purity was raised to 99.99%.
In 2007 the Royal Canadian Mint even struck a special edition of 99.999% purity as well as a monumental 100 kg coin with a face value of one million Canadian dollars.
From 2013 Maple Leafs feature advanced security marks: a laser micro-engraving of a small maple leaf with the year. This makes counterfeiting virtually impossible.
