History
One of the most iconic European silver coins of the 19th century
The silver 5 francs of Napoleon III is the standard circulation coin of the Second French Empire (1852–1870). With the characteristic profile of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, it is one of the most iconic European silver coins of the 19th century, struck in large runs but, through age and wear, increasingly scarce in good condition.
The weight of 25 grams at 900‰ silver guarantees 22.5 grams of fine silver per coin, making it a solid silver holding. Rarer mints (recognisable by the letter under the eagle on the reverse) or exceptionally well-kept examples can carry a higher numismatic premium. We value honestly based on condition and market references.
