The gold of Australia
The Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the most innovative gold investment coins in the world. Struck by the Perth Mint in Western Australia, it combines 99.99% pure gold with annually changing kangaroo designs and advanced security technology.
The coin first appeared in 1986 under the name “Australian Gold Nugget”. The first years (1986–1989) showed famous Australian gold nuggets. In 1989 the Perth Mint made a strategic decision: the switch to the kangaroo design. As a national symbol the kangaroo is more recognisable worldwide. Early “Nugget” editions are sought-after collector’s items today.
In 2011 the Perth Mint set an impressive record: the largest gold coin in the world, a disc of 1 tonne of pure gold, 80 centimetres in diameter, with a face value of one million Australian dollars.
From 2018 the Perth Mint introduces a micro laser inscription in the design: a tiny letter, visible only under magnification, that makes counterfeiting virtually impossible.
