Habsburg gold
The 100 Austrian Corona is one of the most impressive historic gold coins of Europe. Struck in honour of the 60th jubilee of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I, it combines the grandeur of the Habsburg Empire with a substantial gold content of almost one full troy ounce.
Franz Joseph I reigned from 1848 until his death in 1916, almost 68 years. On the obverse he looks to the right, surrounded by his imperial titles. The reverse shows the Austrian coat of arms with the double-headed eagle, symbol of the Habsburg dynasty. Production ran from 1908 to 1915.
After the emperor’s death so-called restrikes were struck with the original design and the year 1915. These remain widely available to this day and trade mainly on their gold value. Original pieces from 1908–1914 can be worth considerably more.
