Good to know

Solid silver or plated? This is how you recognise it

The biggest difference in value is between solid silver and plated cutlery, also called silver plate. Turn your piece over and look for the hallmark, it tells you at once what you have. Read more about hallmarks, silver plate and silver knives on our page about selling silver cutlery.

Plated (silver plate)

Hallmark: 60, 80, 90, 100 or 200

That number indicates how many grams of silver were applied over a dozen pieces, on top of a core of another metal. Well known brands such as Christofle and Wiskemann are plated this way.

Hardly any material value. We do not buy this and simply return it to you.

Solid silver

Hallmark: 800, 835 or 925

That is the silver content in thousandths: 80%, 83.5% or 92.5% (sterling) pure silver. Solid silver usually also carries a hallmark with several small stamps.

We buy this on the fine silver weight times the daily rate.

Because fake pieces have also been sold door to door, we always check solid silver with a meter. That way you are sure of what you have, and so are we.

Silver knives: why we do not buy them

A silver knife always has a thick, hollow handle. That handle is filled with plaster, wax or resin to make it sturdy, and we cannot calculate that weight out. The blade itself is moreover not silver but stainless steel or another metal, because silver is too brittle to cut with. That is why we do not buy silver knives. Spoons, forks and serving pieces in solid silver are of course welcome.

Table silver

Table silver and all silver services

Besides cutlery we also buy solid table silver: dishes, candlesticks, trays, teapots and all silver service pieces such as plates and coasters.

Here too the hallmark tells the most. Solid silver tableware carries a content hallmark (800, 835 or 925) and often also a master mark of the silversmith. For solid pieces the weight is decisive: the heavier the piece, the more fine silver, times the current daily rate.

Note one thing, just as with silver knives: some heavy pieces are filled to stand firmly. Candlesticks and certain bases have a core of plaster, pitch or another filling material, and that filling weight is not silver. So we do not count it. We weigh and assess each piece in front of you, so you know exactly what the pure silver is worth.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about selling silver

How do I know if my cutlery is solid silver or plated?
Look for the hallmark. A number around 60, 90, 100 or 200 means plated (silver plate): that is the amount of silver in grams applied over a dozen pieces, on a core of another metal. A hallmark 800, 835 or 925 indicates solid silver, with that content of pure silver. Well known brands such as Christofle and Wiskemann are usually plated.
Do you buy silver knives?
No. A silver knife always has a thick, hollow handle filled with plaster, wax or resin, and we cannot calculate that weight out. Moreover the blade is not silver but stainless steel, because silver is too brittle to cut with. Spoons, forks and serving pieces in solid silver we do buy.
Does De Munter also buy table silver and cutlery?
Yes, solid table silver, silver cutlery (except knives), dishes and service pieces. Plated cutlery has hardly any material value, so we do not buy it and honestly return it to you.
How do you determine the price of my silver?
We determine the silver content (often 800 or 925, the sterling silver content), weigh the pure silver and multiply it by the current silver rate of that day. All transparently and in front of you.
Do you sell silver coins separately?
Historic silver coins we also assess on their numismatic value, not only on silver weight. See our page about selling silver coins for more info.
Do you buy all silver services and plates?
Yes. Solid silver service pieces such as plates, dishes, candlesticks and trays we buy on the fine silver weight. Look for a content hallmark (800, 835 or 925). Heavy pieces that are partly filled, such as some candlesticks, we count only on the actual silver, not on the filling weight.
Should I polish my silver?
No, leave it as it is. Polishing has no influence on the silver value and can even be harmful for collector pieces.
