History
25 years of reign, in gold
This gold medal honours King Baudouin (BALDVINVS REX). The shown side bears a crowned letter “B” with the date XVII·IVLI·MCMLXXVI (17 July 1976), precisely 25 years after Baudouin took the constitutional oath on 17 July 1951 as the fifth King of the Belgians.
The other side shows the portrait of the king with the inscription “BALDVINVS BELGARVM REX”. The medal appeared in three language versions (Dutch, French and Latin) and was struck in 90% gold, good for 5.805 grams of fine gold.
Many were struck, and over the years many were melted down too. Numismatically the medal therefore yields little premium: the value lies in the gold itself. That is also the basis on which we buy it fairly.
Fifth King of the Belgians. Baudouin (1930–1993) succeeded his father Leopold III in 1951 and reigned for 42 years, until his death in 1993. His silver jubilee in 1976, 25 years on the throne, was a national event. It is precisely that jubilee this medal records with the date 17 July 1976, counted back to the oath on 17 July 1951.
Three language versions. The medal appeared with the inscription in Dutch, French or Latin (BALDVINVS BELGARVM REX). For the value the language makes no difference: each version is 90% gold with the same weight of fine gold. Do you have several pieces or a full set? We value them one by one and calculate the total with you transparently.
